Gryphons top Nash Central in regular season finale, 9-3
- RM's five seniors: Jim Leggett, William Barringer, Nick Phillips, Grant Johnson, Chris Berry
ROCKY MOUNT - Rocky Mount broke open a 3-3 game with Nash Central with For the second straight season, the Gryphons (19-4, 9-1) have to share the crown with someone else. Last year, it was Northern Nash. This year, it's Wilson Fike (17-4, 9-1), which stopped Southern Nash 6-0 Thursday night. The two squads will meet for the second time this week - this time in a tiebreaker game Friday at 7 p.m. at Gryphon Stadium. The winner will receive the league's No. 1 playoff berth and homefield advantage all the way to the regional finals. The NEW 6 is the top-seeded conference in the lower side of the NCHSAA 3-A East bracket of the playoffs. Rocky Mount saw five seniors play their final regular season home game Thursday night and one of them had a sizzling effort at the plate. Designated hitter Jim Leggett went 4-for-4 with three RBI - including a two-run single in Rocky Mount's five-run fifth. Junior Ben Fish preceeded Leggett with a two-run double in the inning. Fish was 2-for-3 and scored twice. He has 30 RBI for the season to lead the Twin County area. Three Nash Central errors in the frame furthered RMHS' cause. Junior Dillon Cockrell came in for starter Nick Hahula in the fifth just after Nash Central had tied the game at 3-all on an RBI-single by Xavier Macklin. Cockrell got three straight outs to end the inning and only allowed one single the rest of the way to get the win (4-0). Macklin took the loss for the Bulldogs. With Southern's loss, the Firebirds and Bulldogs tied for the No. 4 playoff spot for the NEW 6. But SN's win over Nash Central in the RM Invitational Baseball Tournament in April became a tiebreaker and gave the playoff spot to Southern.
