Gryphons fall to Union Pines in tennis playoff opener

CAMERON - Rocky Mount's boys tennis team saw its season end Monday with tennis balla 6-3 loss to Union Pines in the first round of the NCHSAA 3-A dual team tennis state playoffs.

Rocky Mount, the No. 2 seed from the NEW 6 Conference, ended its season with a 12-6 season. Union Pines improved to 17-1.

"It was a close match yesterday and I don't know if it was the long bus  ride, the heat, or IB exam strain but after singles, we just didn't have the energy we needed to beat a very good doubles UP team," said Rocky Mount head coach Barry Nethercutt. "Alex's (Durham) loss in the third set tiebreaker hurt a lot mentally knowing we needed two of the three doubles matches, and the guys just seemed to not have the energy in doubles."
