RMHS netters give SW Edgecombe a doubles headache
April 22, 2009 Rocky Mount High School
A doubleheader in high school tennis? It's kinda rare.
But Rocky Mount's boys team played one Tuesday with NEW 6 foe SouthWest Edgecombe to make up an earlier rainout. But the Cougars had a tough time of it falling 7-2 and 9-0. Instead of playing best of three sets, the players played the best of 10 games in each of the singles and doubles matches.
"We had to play our version of a tennis doubleheader due to all the rain this spring," said Rocky Mount head coach Barry Nethercutt. ",It is difficult to win easily and then turn right around and play the same people again and keep up the same mental toughness but for the most part the guys did that.
"Hendrik (Puettmann) and Will (Boyette) were able to play their first singles matches of the year and got wins," Nethercutt added. "We are now assured of second place and will go to Union Pines for the first round of the playoffs. These guys were picked fifth in the pre-season so finishing second is a good accomplishment, especially with three of the top 6 being first year players who have only played tennis a few months."
