April 22, 2009 By Charles Alston of Rocky Mount High School

When you look at it, the real winner Tuesday of the Rocky Mount-Northern Nash faculty basketball challenge was Relay for Life.
But on the court, the sporting winners were the Gryphons in a 49-31 victory. Keith Barnes coached Rocky Mount, while Grover Battle was the coach of the Northern Nash team.
A little over 300 fans attended - netting $950.00 that will go to Relay for Life as its yearly walk to honor survivors and those who have succumb to cancer starts Friday evening at the Rocky Mount Athletic Complex.
After giving the Knights an early lead in the game's opening minutes on event organizer Henry Drake's nine first-half points, the Gryphons pulled ahead late in the first half and led 21-17 at halftime.
But the second half, Rocky Mount immediately starting pulling away - forcing Northern into turnovers that the Gryphons turned into baskets.
Rocky Mount's Jason Battle, the Gryphons' MVP, scored six of his 10 points in the second stanza, but got solid help from Alan Hess (seven points), Chris Tedford (eight points) and RMHS athletic director Mike Gainey (eight points). Eight Gryphons ended up scatching the scoring column - led by Battle.
Drake led all scorers with 13. Knight guard Jeff Dodrill (five points, several would-be assists) was voted Northern's MVP.
