ROCKY MOUNT
-- Trey Sumler's star-studded season continues with yet another honor for the Nash Central High School boys basketball senior.

Sumler, a wing who averaged 23.6 points per outing this winter for the Bulldogs, has been selected as the NEW-6 Conference's Boys Co-Player of the Year. Sumler shares the award with Wilson Fike's Jeremy Atkinson.

Sumler helped the Bulldogs reach the Round of 16 of the Class 3-A State Playoffs, where they were edged in the final minute by defending state champion Kinston.

Sumler collected 36 points in that outing. He delivered 40 points during an early-season contest against Bunn.

For his career, Sumler offered 1,921 points and was a first-team All-Conference pick four times. He is also Nash Central's career leader in assists (405) and steals (260).

Sumler has been named to play in the annual North Carolina-South Carolina All-Star Game, scheduled for March 21 in Myrtle Beach.

Atkinson was fourth in the state in scoring this past year with a 26.4 points-per-game clip. Like Sumler, he is a four-time All-Conference honoree.

Four Nash County standouts were selected to the boys first team -- Sumler and teammate Fabian White, Northern Nash's Octavius Lyons and Rocky Mount's Tashawn Mabry.

NC's Michael Mosley was tabbed as the NEW-6's Boys Coach of the Year. Mosley guided the Bulldogs to the regular season conference championship.

Over the past four years, Nash Central has accumulated a strong 74-31 worksheet under its veteran mentor.

In the girls voting, SouthWest Edgecombe's Monique Williams was the Player of the Year recipient.

She was joined on the first team by Nash Countians Alyse Hall (Southern Nash), Jasmine Sessoms (Nash Central) and Dyonna Battle (Rocky Mount).
