RMHS drops boys tennis season opener
March 7, 2009 By Charles Alston of Rocky Mount High School
Rocky Mount's boys tennis team opened its 2009 season with a 5-4 defeat to D.H. Conley at Sunset Park Wednesday.
This will be an interesting squad for longtime Gryphon head coach Barry Nethercutt. It's his youngest squad in years.
"We are really young this year, probably my least talented team in 21 years with four players who are just starting out," Nethercutt said. "Doubles is the biggest concern since it takes a lot longer to teach good doubles.
"Alex (Durham) played an excellent first match yesterday against another good player," he said. "He was consistent and worked the points around with patience, not trying to do too much with the simple shot. Kashyap (Kaul) and John (Hader) also had good first-day efforts playing in their first matches ever."
RMHS fell to 0-1 and faced Edenton Holmes at Sunset Park Thursday.
