Guess what guys? A Western Alamance team will finally have to come to Rocky Mount for a playoff contest! The Rocky Mount boys basketball team, the No. 2 seed from the NEW 6 Conference, will host Triad Conference No. 4 seed Western Alamance in the opening round of the NCHSAA 3-A boys basketball playoffs. The two teams will square off in the first round at 7 p.m. Monday at RMHS gym. Some of Rocky Mount's football players who play on the squad (Marcus Jones, Nick Hahula, Philip Wilkins, Hakeem Parker) will see a familiar face on Western's squad. Their point guard is non other than quarterback Donald Britt, who has given the Gryphons fits on the gridiron on more than one occasion. WA comes into the contest with an 11-14 record, while the Gryphons are riding an eight-game winning streak and are 16-10 on the season. RMHS head coach Mike Gainey has his team in the playoffs for the 12th time. It earned him his fifth conference tournament title with its victory over Nash Central Friday evening. The RMHS girls will open the postseason Tuesday evening with Eastern Wayne, 9-15 on the season and the No. 4 seed from the East Carolina Conference. Game time is 7 p.m. The Lady Gryphons (20-4) earned the seventh conference tournament title for their head coach Pam Gainey. Gainey also saw her squad get her the eighth 20-win season of her 16-year career. Gainey is making her 15th appearance in the postseason.
