Rocky Mount sweeps NEW 6 tourney titles

February 22, 2009
Rocky Mount High School

PINETOPS - Rocky Mount junior Tashawn Mabry scored nine of the Gryphons' 13 points in overtime as they beat Nash Central 87-76 in the boys finals of the NEW 6 3-A Conference basketball tournament Friday at a sold-out SouthWest Edgecombe High gym.

Mabry poured in a game-high 32 points and pulled down 16 rebounds en route to being the event's MVP for the second straight season.

But Mabry had tons of help Friday. Senior forward Philip Wilkins had a night that sent many back to the days of Gryphon All-American Buck Wiliams. Wilkins had a career-high 21 points to go with his career-best 20 rebounds. No Rocky Mount player had recorded a 20-20 double-double since Williams did the trick in the 1978 4-A state final game.

The girls got the night off to the right start with a 58-48 win over Wilson Fike, despite seeing senior Tramicka James bomb in 30 points to keep the Lady Golden Demons alive.

We will have more on these contests later Saturday.
