PINETOPS - After a somewhat shaky start, Rocky Mount's girls basketball team seems to be rounding into shape.
The Lady Gryphons, the defending NEW 6 regular season and conference tournament champions, took over first place in the NEW 6 Conference Saturday night after they ran SouthWest Edgecombe out of its own gym by handing the Lady Cougars a solid 61-40 defeat.
The win leaves RMHS at 4-0 in league play and 12-4 overall this season. For SouthWest, it was its first league loss (3-1, 11-3).
Dyonna Battle and Danita Whitaker scored 15 points each, while freshman Tia Hudgins added 12 to put the Lady Knights out of their misery. Rocky Mount combined fast break baskets with solid work on the offensive boards to stay an offensive threat all evening long.
The contest was tied at 9-all after the first period and RMHS led 24-20 at the half. But in the third, center Whitaker went to work - scoring 10 of her 15 points that allowed Rocky Mount to pull ahead to lead 42-32.
