RM girls tennis claims share of Big East title

RED OAK - Rocky Mount's girls tennis claimed a share of the Big East Conference regular season title Thursday with its 9-0 win at Northern Nash. The Gryphons tied Wilson Fike with 9-1 league records for the top spot.
No decision has been made yet about either flipping a coin or possibly playing Fike again to determine the league's No. 1 and No. 2 seeds for the upcoming NCHSAA state playoffs. The two teams split their regular season meetings. Rocky Mount won at Fike 6-3, but fell at home to Fike 7-2.
"This was a good way to end the regular season," said Rocky Mount head coach Barry Nethercutt whose squad closed the regular season with a 15-4 overall record. "Lindsay (Thomas) has just played brillantly all year and at 10-0 should definitely be the conference Player of the Year. I think the loss back at Greene Central turned out to be really positive. The girls have shown a better focus and have really picked up their effort and energy level since that match and are playing some really good tennis.
"Now we shift gears a little and get ready for the conferene tournament next week which is an individual event rather than a team event," he said. "We have to choose which girls play singles and which play doubles and the ultimate goal is to advance to the regional tournament and then to the state tournament. Therefore, we are playing Lindsay and Kate in doubles with the hope that they can make a real run at a state title like Kate's sister did two years ago. Addie (Keeter) and Caroline (Nelson) are also playing doubles and hope to make the state tournament as well. Margaret (Arroyo) and Julia (Amend) will play singles in the conference tournament."
