STANHOPE - Rocky Mount continued to build on their winning Big East conference record Thursday afternoon with a 6-1 boys soccer victory over Southern Nash.
In an effort to build their confidence, the Gryphons (12-1-2, 3-1 Big East) came out of the gates with speed and spirit. Seemingly wanting to make an early statement, they were able to begin a three-goal run in the first half just five minutes into the match.
The first strike was made when senior forward Justin Marsigli fought through Firebird defenders to find junior Matt Williams. Williams launched the ball into the right post out of the Firebird goalkeeper's reach.
Minutes later, Williams was found open again when junior Andrew Morales moved behind the Southern Nash defense and assisted Williams in his second goal of the matc for a 2-0 Gryphon advantage.
Later in the half, sophomore midfielder Lee McAvoy was able to carry the ball through the Firebirds' defense and score the third goal of the period unassisted.
Southern Nash did, however, answer back by placing a goal on the board with less than one minute remaining. The Firebirds' Adam Zuniga worked the ball over the top of the Gryphon defense and found teammate Carlos Leon. Leon toed the ball just past Gryphon keeper Drew Gorham to put the Firebirds on the board just before the break.
Returning to the pitch after halftime with a 3-1 lead, Rocky Mount again stuck early taking control of the match and ensuring momentum remained in their favor. Williams placed a ball in space for Morales to pick up just in front of the net making the score 4-1 RMHS.
Later in the second half, Trevor Smith connected and scored an unassisted fifth goal. As seen in previous matches, Gryphon substitutions were made to allow the bench greater minutes of playing time.
The Gryphons were able to place one additional goal on the board when again Williams connected with Morales. All defensive players were able to wear down the Firebirds and protect their lead the remainder of the match.
Gorham finished with ninr saves while Gryphon freshman goalie Drew Thompson stopped three. Southern Nash's goalie Manny Rodriguez made 14 saves during the match.
The Gryphons hope to continue with the confidence and momentum gained in this week's wins as they will face Northern Nash at Gryphon Field Monday. Game time is 5 p.m. |
