RMHS girls tennis drops 5-4 decision to Greene Central, beats Hunt

October 3, 2009
Rocky Mount High School

SNOW HILL - Rocky Mount's girls tennis team dropped a close 5-4 decision on the road to traditional 2-A power Greene Central Wednesday.

Rocky Mount won its No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, but lost matches in its Nos. 3-5 spots before cashing in at No. 6 rung.

RMHS fell in two out of the three doubles matches to drop the match and fall  to 12-4 for the season. RM is currently in second place in the Big East Conference with a 6-1 record.

"Greene Central played well and in the end, they were just tougher than us, not really better or smarter but tougher mentally," said RMHS head coach Barry Nethercutt. "They never got down on themselves and we picked each other up in doubles. Hopefully it's a learning lesson as we go to Fike (Thursday) for a final shot at a share of the conference title."

On Tuesday, RMHS destroyed Big East member 9-0 in league match at Sunset Park.

"This was an "ok" match where some girls played well and some not so well," said Nathercutt, whose squad is ranked No. 6 in the state in the latest N.C. High School Tennis Coaches Association.  "Lindsay (Thomas) was very dominating at No. 1. Keonna (love of Hunt) is very athletic, but Lindsay kept great pressure on her all day and never gave her a chance to run down many balls.

"Our No. 3 doubles, Margaret (Arroyo) and Elizabeth (Thompson) played their best overall match of the season. They really seemed to finally put together things we've been working on at practice into an actual match. Hopefully that will continue as we get ready  the rest of the week."
