NASHVILLE - The push for the immediate construction and relocation of the new Rocky Mount High School hit a snag Monday.

Nash County commissioners voted 5-2 at its Monday meeting to begin construction funding for the 60-acre site starting in mid-2011. The commissioners' meeting room was filled to capacity with concerned parents, teachers and administrators who shared their pleas for quick action.

Despite more than three years of planning and design efforts, Nash-Rocky Mount Public School officials were given new construction priorities for capital projects.

Under the county's adopted Capital Improvements Program, both Middlesex Elementary School and Southern Nash High School's field house will be first in line for available funding. In the 2010-11 fiscal year, $8.5 million will be allocated for the renovations of Middlesex Elementary School, and $1.5 million will be allotted for the field house.
