Goodwin taken in 17th round of MLB Draft

NEW YORK - When you are labeled "unsignable" by baseball scouts, you are usually relagated to the late rounds or not drafted at all.
That's what happened to Rocky Mount senior Brian Goodwin Wednesday as the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft moved into its second day of action.
Goodwin was picked in the 17th round by the Chicago White Sox. His selection, to novices of the Draft, might seem puzzling since many mock draft websites had him going anywhere from late in the first round to the third round. But his signability was challenged by MLB teams.
His advisors, the Scott Boras Group, tend to prefer the players they may eventually represent play college baseball if they qualify and come out after their junior season. Goodwin and his family had more of a preference that he attend North Carolina, which he signed a letter-of-intent to last November.
It was rumored that Boras was asking in the neighborhood of $2.8 million for Goodwin in a signing bonus, which put many financially strapped clubs out of the running for his services.
Barring something unforeseen, Goodwin will likey be a fixture in UNC coach Mike Fox's outfield next spring. |
