ROCKY MOUNT - Rocky Mount head baseball coach Pat Smith, who led the Gryphons to the NCHSAA 3-A state title last season, resigned from his post Tuesday.
He will remain on as a faculty member until June 16.
Citing that not repeating as state champs and the overall pressure and regrets of the team's three losses this past season put on him, Smith stated Wednesday that he was ready for a rest after spending 50 straight years either playing or coaching baseball.
Smith, who retired from coaching at South Johnston before coming to Rocky Mount in the summer of 2002, turned 60 in January.
After a rough 20-29 start after his first two campaigns, he went an astouding 102-28 his last five seasons at RMHS for a total record of 122-57. He also led the Gryphons to either a share or the outright NEW 6 Conference title four times.
Smith concludes his 22 years as a head coach with a 323-187 record and two state titles. He also won one as player at Robersonville High (1967) and two as an assistant coach at Robersonville (1972, 1973).
More on Smith leaving the program will be forthcoming - right here! |
